It's 100% true that modern cast iron isn't made as well as vintage cast iron. I've been hands on with vintage pieces and the differences are noticeable. Much lighter and smoother. Field is probably the closest modern equivalent.
Definitely get some on eBay or Etsy. Just make sure you go through a reputable source and ask them about whether there are any cracks and if the pan sits flush on a flat surface!
